SELECTING AN OPTIC - An optic can form a narrow, medium or wide beam of light to target the appropriate surface area needed to be lit, while minimizing wasted light.

Select an optic that will help you achieve the desired light spread. Optics selection is not an exact science you may need to try different options.

Based on the area and the distance you require to illuminate, refer to Table below to determine the beam spread needed to efficiently light the surface area

Narrow Beam Optics - 9 to 14 degrees

Narrow beam optics are most often used in target light environments. Typical beam angles range from 9 to 14 degrees. The illustration on the right illustrates the illuminance profile of lenses in the category.

Medium Beam Optics - 15 to 30 degrees

Medium beam optics are most often used in target light environments. Typical beam angles range from 15 to 30 degrees. The illustration on the right illustrates the illuminance profile of lenses in the category.

Wide Beam Optics - 35 to 50 degrees

Wide beam optics are most often used in target light environments. Typical beam angles range from 35 to 50 degrees. The illustration on the right illustrates the illuminance profile of lenses in the category.

Elliptical Optics - 10 x 40 to 10 x 100 degrees

Elliptical beam optics are used in applications that require a narrow beam in one direction and a significantly wider beam in the opposite direction.  A typical elliptical beam is around 10 by 40 degrees with variants as high as 10 x 100 degrees.  Applications such as wall washes, pathway lighting and even signage lighting all use elliptical beam optics. The illustration on the right illustrates the illuminance profile of lenses in the category.
