Thermal Solutions

Thermal management is an important factor to consider when designing an SSL LED fixture. The heat emitted from the back of the LUXEON LED needs to be effectively dissipated to ensure maximum efficiency of an LED luminaire. Inadequate thermal management will lead to a shift in color, lower light output and in some cases premature failure therefore adequate heat sinking is a crucial requirement to maintain the life of an LED application. There are two types of thermal heatsink coolers you can consider, active cooling and passive cooling heatsinks.
Active Cooling Thermal Solutions

Active cooling thermal solutions utilizes fans or forced air to properly ventilate and cool a heat sink. The Nuventix SynJet is a unique technology that creates turbulent, pulsated air-jets that can be precisely directed to enable superior heat dissipation in LED lighting applications. SynJet technology is helping LED luminaire manufacturers resolve cooling challenges that require high reliability in a flexible form factor.

Passive Cooling Thermal Solutions - Aavid Thermalloy & Nuventix Inc.
Passive cooling thermal solutions leverage the use of a properly configured system to ventilate an LED system through natural convection, radiation or conduction into the ambient air. There are no moving parts and fans in such an application or the consumption of additional energy. This is the most commonly used, least expensive and easiest to implement as a thermal heatsink solution. Custom solutions are generally more expensive, but are the best way to fully optimize an application.
